When Your Network is Working, It is Not THAT Difficult

Let’s talk about focusing on strategies to help you build your business and personal relationships, and your network…

Many of the folks I work with on the topic of networking assign a degree of difficulty to it that is just not fair. And I believe the reason is because they think that they need to do all the work.

The reality of networking, and mutually respectful business relationships, is that it behaves like a “net.” Not everything is a one-on-one transaction. Instead, if you view your business relationships almost like a fishnet, you know people who know people who know people who know people.

So it is not just about you and the 200 acquaintances you have. It is about you and the 200 acquaintances that you have, and the 200 acquaintances that those folks have. So in that quick model, you are a second degree from 40,000 people. That is huge.

Networking is about building relationships, but it is also about synergies with those relationships. In other words, if you’re looking for someone to help you with marketing for your business, you may not know a marketing expert, but one of your 200 relationships probably does. In that case, talking about it with the people you do know, and asking them for suggestions and referrals from the people they know, is a great example about how a network can work.

So, take the pressure off. It doesn’t have to be all you. Employee the relationships that you have, to better your personal and professional efforts.
