Want to Stall Your Career? Take Things Personally

Business is business.

When things don’t work out, don’t see it as a direct assault on you.

  • If you don’t get chosen for a project…
  • If you are missed on the routing of a message…
  • If someone forgets to mention your name as part of a team…

It happened, and that’s it. Time to move forward.

Wasting emotional energy on being hurt, or wondering if it was a negative career signal can be toxic to your ability to perform. If you believe you need to address the omission or co-mission, do it is a business like manner without letting it get to your gut.

I’m truly amazed at how many times I see this happen, and how much energy people put into the analysis.

Your ability to NOT take things personally, and instead focus on the good of the organization will impact your ability to think clearly and in a focused way.

If you find your thought going south, stop. Think about the business. Do something to fix the issue. Then move on. And TRULY forget it.

Get it?
