Networking does not have to be “ominous”. Just be yourself. Do not approach networking where your main strategy is “what’s in it for me”. Introduce yourself with the purpose of sharing your talents, knowledge and skills for the benefit of others. If you do this I believe the “what’s in it for me” will follow
